Authentic MELROSE straitjacket from the 1960's. Size Adult Large.
This is a really cool find and it's in great, used shaped for the age of this restraint. The canvas is a natural cream color and is complete with no tears, rips or damage; it's just been put to good use (depending on what side of the straitjacket you're on!) This Melrose straitjacket is unique from other straitjackets before and after its time in its style and design. Most straitjackets are fitted from behind (like Posey, Humane Restraint jackets that are designed to be as intimidating as well as secure with all of the buckles and straps in the back.) Not so with the Melrose jacket! It even has a very soft and fitted collar that lay flat and is applied from the front, with the three buckles and straps (the straps with their institutional blue strip on each) fastens just as secure. The jacket is also slightly tapered at the sides to offer a more flattering fit for private hospitals where a patient would feel less like a prisoner when restrained in a straitjacket.
The canvas is heavy and pliable and is actually quite comfortable. It fits is similar to a Posey Medium jacket (I'm 5'11, 175 pounds with an athletic build and this fits the same as a medium Posey; very comfortable and surprisingly secure!) The measurements from pit to pit are 40" (again, I'm a size 43 chest and it was a good, solid fit), the length is 23" so it looks and feels "fitted" and the arm lengths are 31" from sewing at the buckle. The buckles are metal and solid, although they've darkened with age. They still work quite well when fastened, a testament to the quality of American made restraints, especially from that time period. The arm straps have some very slight fraying (pictured) but this is quite minimal and doesn't compromise the function and security of this very rare straitjacket.
Pictures were taken in natural light. The canvas does have some staining from use (no blood or anything bad like molds that can affect canvas.) This was well used in its time and was carefully stored until I got it about 10 years ago on eBay when the Melrose jackets would sometimes pop up. I've kept it in an airtight container and it's in the same condition I origninally bought it in (we used it for a few photo shoots several years ago.)
All in all, this Melrose jacket is pretty cool and is the actual style that Joan Crawford wore in the William Castle film "Straitjacket" (1964), reflecting the unique style of this period restraint.

Thanks for looking. This Melrose Straitjacket is from my personal collection.
